Changing Spaces Moving, Inc. is a family owned business that officially started as a moving company on August 14, 2003 with one truck. Scott Planson utilized this truck with a friend and within six weeks needed a second truck to meet the customer moving demand. The company added Joe Planson (Scott's father) in February of 2004 to handle sales, marketing, scheduling, truck maintenance and other miscellaneous business requirements while Scott ran operations. Two more trucks were purchased in March of 2004 and were kept busy during the summer of 2004. The fifth truck was purchased in December of 2004 and the sixth truck in March 2005, the seventh truck in June 2005 and the eight truck in December 2005. Trucks number nine and ten were added in February and April of 2006. Trucks eleven and twelve were added in September 2007 and number fourteen in July 2008. Trucks fifteen and sixteen were added in July 2010 and Truck number two was sold.

Our trucks are principally 26' to 28' with wide and high profile boxes, a cab-over engine design that maneuvers well in tight spots in the city and the hills of Birmingham. They are outfitted with ramps and professional moving equipment, including “E” track to help improve the speed of the move.

Changing Spaces Moving, Inc. has grown in a slow economy by taking market share during the down housing market. One can readily see that this is a very rapid growth rate for a new start-up company. Why this fast growth? “The People” that do the work are highly skilled in the moving profession. They also have excellent work ethics, speed, stamina, and most of all—customer skills! These drivers and loaders received some of the highest movers pay for their skills in the Birmingham area. You get what you pay for!

High expectations, accountability, ethics, a personal approach, and a clear corporate culture help preserve the growth. We chiefly owe our company’s growth to referrals from past customers and the business of repeat customers. We are both residential and commercial movers providing local and long distance moving.

This is a hands-on family business with Peg Planson (Scott’s mother) and Lori Planson (Scott’s wife) performing the day-to-day sales role. We have also added two customer service representatives to our office staff, Kim North and Cheryl Hicks.

SCOTT PLANSON: Owner

Scott Planson attended Tri-State University located in Angola, Indiana on a soccer scholarship. Scott went on to begin his career with Motorola as a Materials Analyst. Upon five years of distinguished service with Motorola he relocated to Birmingham, AL, this is where Scott had his first exposure to the moving industry. Working at one of the largest moving companies in Birmingham, Scott started from the ground up, starting as a driver eventually working his way up to management.

In 2003, Scott came up with the idea for a moving company that is based on serving the customer and providing the highest quality at the most affordable rate. With help from his father, Joe Planson, Changing Spaces Moving, Inc. was founded. With one truck and revolves around the slogan, “Careful, Fast, and Courteous”. This model proved to be a success and eight years later the company operates fourteen trucks and is a market leader within the Birmingham moving industry.

Scott is married to Lori Lee Planson, who also serves as Treasurer for Changing Spaces Moving, Inc. They have a beautiful daughter named Emma Chapman Planson.

JOE PLANSON: Owner

Joe Planson attended Tri-State University located in Angola, Indiana and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Joe is a mechanical engineer with 40 years of extensive experience in plant operations, maintenance, project management, and consulting and planning on a global basis. This work experience includes GM, John Deere, Citation Corporation and running his own business. The planning, logistical project scheduling and engineering, and especially attention to detail made this transfer into the moving industry an easy one. In this business, attention to detail is everything.

Joe is married to Peg Planson, who also serves as Office Manager for Changing Spaces Moving, Inc. They have two sons and three beautiful grand children.
