Cold Weather Moving Tips

Careful, Fast & Courteous

Moving on an ideal day is challenging; moving when the weather is cold and uncooperating is next level, especially for those of us who live in Alabama where we rarely deal with snow, ice, and cold air.

Living in the south does not preclude us from winter weather

Of course, we’re not exempt from cold weather as several headlines from December of 2022 show:

  • ‘Widespread’ black ice possible on north Alabama roads overnight, weather service warns
  • Counties in north Alabama shut down travel as snow, ice cover roadways
  • North Alabama cities close roads, delay openings amid icy conditions

If you’re planning on moving during the winter season and want to set yourself up for a successful move, we encourage you to take a few moments to read through the following cold weather moving tips below.

Cold weather moving tips

Get your utilities set up as early as possible

After spending the day moving your belongings (and essentially your life) to your new home, you really want to be welcomed by lights and heat. Of course, the internet would be good too but isn’t as crucial. Turn utilities on at least two weeks in advance if possible to ensure your first night in the new home is a warm one.

Transport temperature-sensitive electronics and belongings in your car

While cabs of moving trucks are heated, the portion that will house your belongings is not. If you have anything that could be adversely affected by colder temperatures, we recommend moving them via your heated vehicle. Items such as small electronics, medications, antiques, and items powered by batteries are a few examples of what you want to keep out of the moving truck.

Label moving boxes

This particular moving tip is relevant no matter what time of year you move. To make your move as efficient as possible, be sure to label every moving box so it ends up in the right room of your new house.

Dress in layers

On moving day, there’s a good chance you’ll be running around, going in and out of houses, and whatnot; be sure to dress in layers so you’re not too cold or too hot.

Make sure your vehicles are winter ready

If your new home is a good distance away or even out of state, you’ll want to make sure your vehicle(s) are winter ready. That means:

  • Changing the oil, if needed
  • Topping off fluids
  • Making sure windshield wipers work well
  • Checking to see if your tires’ air pressure is good

If your new home is in a region where snow is on the ground, you may consider purchasing snow tires before you make your move.

Have an emergency kit ready

Another cold weather moving tip related to the actual drive is to have an emergency kit stored in your vehicle. Items you’ll want to have on hand include:

  • A first-aid kit
  • Blankets
  • Extra clothes
  • Jumper cables
  • Flashlights
  • Shovel
  • Ice scraper
  • Water & non-perishable snacks

For convenience’s sake, you can purchase ready-made kits like this one on Amazon. If you go that route instead of creating your own, make sure you add items that are not included such as blankets and clothes.
