How To Pack Clothes For A Move

Careful, Fast & Courteous

When it comes to packing clothes for a move, cramming pants, shirts, dresses, and all clothing into garbage bags the morning of a move is not a great strategy and will likely result in stress and confusion. Really the best way to pack clothes for a move is to be organized and intentional. To make the process easier and more efficient, Changing Spaces Moving, Inc., has put together a few moving tips for packing clothes.

Purge your closets ahead of time

Before packing your clothes up, spend some time going through your closet and drawers and getting rid of anything you no longer wear or need. This will not only make packing easier but also help you start fresh in your new home.

Sort clothes by season and type

Sort your clothes by season and type, such as pants, shirts, dresses, sweatshirts, and coats. This will make it easier to pack and unpack when you arrive at your new home.

Use wardrobe boxes

Rather than transporting your clothing in the aforementioned trash bags, consider using wardrobe boxes. Designed specifically for this task, wardrobe boxes are tall boxes with a built-in hanging rod that allows you to keep your clothes on hangers. This is the easiest and most efficient way to pack clothes, as it minimizes wrinkles and allows you to move your clothes directly from the closet to the box.

Don’t pick up boxes from the grocery store

If the cost of wardrobe boxes is more than you’d like to spend, simply pick up durable moving boxes. Do not grab boxes from the grocery store as they are not always up to the job, may be dirty, and could house spiders or other insects.

Use vacuum-sealed bags

Vacuum-sealed bags are also a good option for packing clothes that can be folded or rolled, such as t-shirts, jeans, and sweaters. These bags reduce the amount of space your clothes take up and keep them protected from moisture and dirt.

Pack shoes separately

Rather than worry about your shoes dirtying your clothes, pack them separately. Use shoe boxes or a separate box to pack your shoes, and fill any empty spaces with socks or other small items. You might also consider filling shoes with socks or washcloths to help them keep their form during the move.

Label boxes

Label each box with its contents and whose room it belongs in. This will make it easier to unpack when you arrive at your new home. You might also consider a color-coding system.

Pack a suitcase

Pack a suitcase with enough clothes for the first few days in your new home. It should also include toiletries and any necessary medications. This will help you avoid having to unpack everything immediately upon arrival.
