Moving While Pregnant

Careful, Fast & Courteous

When you’ve got a baby on board the things that were once easily managed become just a little bit harder as each month of pregnancy goes by. Imagine moving while pregnant – you know swollen feet, backaches, frequent urination, and all the other joys that come with impending motherhood. In all seriousness though, moving while pregnant is ascertainable but some adjustments may be required.

First things first – talk with your doctor about how moving while pregnant

You’d talk to your Ob-Gyn before you travel; moving is no different. In order to maintain a healthy pregnancy and BEFORE you lift a single moving box, discuss the upcoming move with your doctor. Be sure to follow all instructions in order to keep you and the little one safe.

Stay organized before, during, and after the move

Whether you call it “pregnancy brain”, “mommy brain”, “brain fog”, or something else entirely, it is very real. Don’t let your move go off the rails because you forget a critical detail. Beat forgetfulness by keeping lists, checking your calendar regularly, and employing other strategies you know will keep you organized.

Give yourself plenty of time to pack

Preparing to move can be tiring and being pregnant while moving is exhausting. That’s why it’s a good idea to start packing early and take a lot of breaks. If you find yourself standing a lot throughout the process, be sure to put your feet up regularly to help with circulation.

Get lots of help (volunteers & paid pros)

For many of us admitting we need help is a hard pill to swallow. For pregnant women, recognizing their limitations may be even more challenging but it’s a must. Don’t be afraid to recruit helpers for every stage of the move and if your budget allows, consider hiring packers, cleaners, or other services that will reduce your load and stress levels.

Declutter before you move

If you’re in the last trimester of pregnancy, you know you’ll be nesting sooner than later but before you focus on setting up your nursery, consider paring down what you already have. Decluttering before you move will reduce the workload up front and at the new home – why move something that’s just going to end up in the trash pile or given away?

Choose a trustworthy moving company

If you’re planning on hiring a moving company for your upcoming move, be sure to find one you’re comfortable with. Ask friends, family, and co-workers for their recommendations, and be sure to read unsolicited reviews. Ask all the questions you have, be sure to mention all your concerns, and look over the moving quote thoroughly. Understanding expectations and costs before your moving day arrives and being at ease with your move of choice will eliminate confusion and potential stress.
